FEATURED PROJECT
Points of View Returns to Market Square Park
The 30-foot-tall steel and wood sculpture Points of View by James Surls returned to its home in Market Square Park after undergoing conservation and restoration treatments. Conservator Robert Pringle repainted the steel and recreated the wood elements in consultation with the artist. Professional art handlers from TYart removed the sculpture last fall, stored it during restoration, and reinstalled it in Market Square Park. Originally created for the center of the park in 1991, Points of View now stands above a gentle water feature on the Travis Street side of the park.
The sculpture, part of the City of Houston Art Collection, was returned in time for the grand re-opening of Market Square Park planned for late August. Lauren Griffith Associates and Ray + Hollington Architects redesigned the park to reflect the changing character of the area. Guided by community input, the park will feature a crescent-shaped dog run, small restaurant with outdoor plaza, great lawn, historic art walk, seasonal plantings and flowers, and a memorial to Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas and the 9/11 victims.
Houston Downtown Management District has supervised the design and project management and will operate and maintain the park, in coordination with the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department, once complete. Houston Arts Alliance has provided art consulting services.
